Description
Unmounted original photograph of a man convicted of murder and imprisoned in a wooden cage to endure an unusually cruel, terrifying and humiliating death by hanging. This image reveals the scene after the death by hanging has been achieved and his head has been covered. Inscribed on the negative is the caption ‘Hanged in Platform’.
Contrary to the popular belief that the prisoner is left to die of starvation and thirst, the execution is much more sadistic, he is imprisoned within the wooden cage standing on a pile of thin stones (or wooden planks) and a noose is placed around his neck. Each day, one piece is pulled out, until he can no longer stand, and either his neck snaps under the weight of his body or he is slowly strangled to death.
