1883 True Crime Avenge Thy Father with Murder

Full Account, from the Shooting of Captain Nutt to the Death of Dukes, and Trial of the Son and Brother. In 1882, in an era when personal and family honor were paramount, the killings of Civil War hero Capt. A.C. Nutt and lawyer and politician Nicholas Dukes led to two of the most sensational and notorious murder trials of the 19th Century, rivaling, if not exceeding, in interest and attention that of Lizzie Borden’s trial. Dukes denounced Capt. Nutt’s daughter, the beautiful “Lizzie” Nutt (Duke’s fiancee), of sexual dalliance with other men and broke his engagement to her. Dukes and Capt. Nutt then fought at the Jennings Hotel, Uniontown, which ended with Dukes shooting and killing Nutt. Dukes stood trial for murder but was acquitted. Nutt’s son, James, then shot and killed Dukes later on the street. Nutt then stood trial for murder and was also acquitted. Scarce.
