Description

Two letters are enclosed to the mother of a deceased young man, the first offers condolences for his death, and confirms returning the body as requested, and continues to inform her that her son went by an alias while in Kansas and the discovery of his real name was purely by accident. Comforting words are extended regarding his exemplary treatment during his short although deadly affliction with Malaria. The undertaker continues, outlining his personal effects and payments settling his estate including the full costs relative to his burial expenses. Suggestions are made to his mother to visit in person and settle the final aspects of his estate along with associated fees for his care after death. Dated September 30th, 1875.

A second letter dated October 2, 1875 is also enclosed that reiterates the discovery of a single letter unsent by which they were able to identify the son’s true identity. The letter continues to relay that details were provided the mother regarding the circumstances of his death and suggesting she travel in person to finalize the estate and stating the body was forwarded to her by Express. Since then she has not responded.

Very interesting and insightful content. Also includes an incredible illustrated business card from the undertaker featuring a detailed graphic of a coffin and employing beautiful period fonts. An outstanding and rare offering!
