Trilobites existed in the world’s oceans for almost 300 million years, they are the earliest-known groups of arthropods. Their first appearance in the fossil record was 521 million years ago. They flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic but all but died out during the Devonian period leaving only the Proetids variety. These last extant trilobites finally disappeared in the mass extinction 252 million years ago at the end of the Permian.
