Collapsible Top Hat

in 1812, Antoine Gibus invented the collapsible top hat. Often called “opera hats”, because when flattened, they were more convenient to store in the cloakrooms at the opera, and some theaters had a shelf under the seats to keep them.

This beautiful vintage hat is covered in an elegant forest green with a black ribbon which hides the collapsible metal components inside.

Inside the hat… Wright & Long, 124 High Holburn, W.C. 15 George Street, Richmond (London).

The hatbox is included. It is very worn, but the hat is tip top! Inside the hatbox, the name Major Lockwood is written.
