An original hand-painted photograph early 20th century of the Moat Around Peking” as noted on the back. The Beijing city fortifications were constructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties from the early 1500s to the year 1553. The defence system included city walls, moats, gate towers, barbicans, watchtowers, corner guard towers, enemy sight towers, and military encampments both outside and inside the city. The Moat around imperial city Forbidden City is 3,153 feet from south to north and 2,474 feet wide from east to west, occupying an area of 7,750,000 sq feet.
