An exceptional CDV photograph circa 1860 historically significant, intriguing and noteworthy. Two clearly prominent gentlemen pose rather stoically for the camera, understandably so, given that on the reverse in period ink, in a distinct flowing script it reads THIS IS ME AND MORSHEAD MAYOR OF ST. MARY’S.
As can be expected the photographer Richard S. Brooke, did a commendable job with almost 3D composition and terrific tonal range. A beautiful sepia tone highlights the detail and confidence in this image.
After 30 years of collecting personally and specializing in Hamilton and Dundas photographers, I know this to be R.S. Brooke’s first back stamp, putting this image to the early 1860s.
Condition: clean strong mount crisp corners, no trimming.
